FROM THE PARAGUAYAN CHACO AND THE CERRADO TO THE PARANAENSE FOREST

Paraguay is a privileged country for birdwatching, with more than 700 recorded species inhabiting an extraordinary variety of ecosystems. From the arid and vast Paraguayan Chaco, through the savannas of the Cerrado, to the lush Paranaense Forest, each region offers unique landscapes and unparalleled opportunities for birdwatching enthusiasts.

The Paraguayan Chaco, with its dry forests, grasslands, and wetlands, is home to species adapted to extreme environments, such as the Red Shoveler (Spatula cyanoptera), the Chaco Owl (Strix chacoensis), the Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba), and the Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis). Wetlands also host aquatic birds such as herons and storks.

The Cerrado, an ecosystem of savannas and scrublands, shelters colorful and striking species such as the Bandoleta (Cypsnagra hirundinacea), the Campo Magpie (Cyanocorax cristatellus), and the Black-fronted Piping Guan (Pipile jacutinga), along with parrots and macaws that fill the landscape with sounds and colors.

The Paranaense Forest, part of the Atlantic Forest, astonishes with its exuberance and great diversity. Here echoes the song of the Bare-throated Bellbird (Procnias nudicollis), Paraguay’s national symbol, accompanied by the White Manakin (Manacus manacus), the Uniform Finch (Haplospiza unicolor), and the Black-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus anomalus). This region is also a refuge for threatened species with restricted distribution, making it a key area for conservation.

With this richness of habitats and species, Paraguay stands out as an exceptional destination for those seeking an authentic and diverse birdwatching experience in the heart of South America.
